Who was Shah Jalal?
He was a well respected historic Muslim personality of the 8th century (Hijri). Believed to be from Konya in modern day Türkiye. Some scholars also believe he was Yemeni. His name is commonly associated with the Muslim conquest of Sylhet in modern day Bangladesh. According to legend a tyrannical king was oppressing the Muslims of the region.
He arrived with 360 of his companions and assisted Nasiruddin, the armed forces chief of the Lakhnauti Bengal Sultanate, to conquer the territory. The tyrannical king is said to have fled from the country thereafter. Shah Jalal and his companions helped spread Islam throughout the Bengal region in the years that followed.
